The Correlation Between Sleep Quality and Urinary Tract Issues

February 20, 2019 by admin

Poor sleep quality has been linked to many health conditions. A new study from the Baylor College of Medicine has discovered that there is also a link between sleep quality and urinary tract issues in men. The study was prompted by an increase in clinics of men who were night shift workers with lower urinary tract symptoms. The results of the study are encouraging.

About the Study

After seeing an increase in men with lower urinary tract symptoms, researchers began noticing a pattern. Many of the men presenting with these symptoms were on the night shift, which often coincides with poor sleep quality. The researchers conducted a survey of the men presenting lower urinary tract symptoms to determine their lifestyle and sleep quality.

The results of the study showed that there is a link between lower urinary tract symptoms and sleep quality. Although there can be many potential causes of LUTS, poor sleep quality could exacerbate symptoms and make them more frequent and severe.

Symptoms of LUTS

There are several symptoms that men with LUTS may notice. These symptoms include a frequent need to urinate, a frequent and strong urge to urinate, burning during urination, urinary leaking, difficulty in urinating, and pelvic pain. These symptoms are often worse if you are not getting enough quality sleep.

There can be several different causes of lower urinary tract symptoms. Some studies have linked LUTS to bladder cancer or an enlarged prostate. These correlations seem to be indicating that LUTS is a result of these conditions rather than the cause of them. Often, the exact cause of lower urinary tract symptoms is difficult to pinpoint, but they can be treated.
